The Suddenlies of God
Acts 2:2 And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
Pentecost was an occurrence of what I call a “suddenly of God”. A “suddenly” is a moment when God surprisingly breaks into time and space with an intervention of the Kingdom. The Greek word translated suddenly here means without warning or unforeseen. It was used for the suddenness of a lightening bolt. Pentecost was a spiritual explosion – like a flash from heaven. Repeatedly in the Bible and throughout church history God has intervened with suddenlies.
While our lives are not a constant stream of Suddenlies, neither is our life filled with only natural events. God still steps into our lives and suddenly changes. Notice that, although this was suddenly given by God, the believers were waiting for Him with ‘one accord’ prayer.
There are other “suddenlies” in the Bible that changed the course of earthly events.
In Acts 12:7 an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared to Peter while he was in prison. This suddenly was also preceded by prayer as the church prayed for his release. In Acts 16:25 about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God. . .; and suddenly there came a great earthquake. This suddenly was preceded by prayer and praise. Praise is a weapon that will bring God into any situation.
Sometimes God sends a suddenly into our lives to get our attention like He did when he struck Saul on the road to Damascus in Acts 22. There are a few extraordinary suddenlies but we have many small ones which are also interventions of God into our lives. Look for God to intervene suddenly today and over the next few weeks. Pray and expect God to show up in situations you encounter.
Prayer: Father I expect you to intervene suddenly in my life and ask you to give me eyes to see you at work.
