God Wants to Talk to You!

Did you know that God wants to talk to you? Don’t worry, it’s not like being called to the principal’s office in school. God simply wants a relationship with you where he can speak to you. This has always been his desire since he walked and talked with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Satan’s goal of disrupting God’s speech to us was accomplished by getting men to doubt when he asked them “Did God say . . .”

 
Ever since the fall we have been reluctant to allow God to talk. When God wanted to talk to Israel in Exodus 20 they told Moses “You speak to us, and we will listen; but do not let God speak to us, lest we die.” Later the prophets are presented as the ideal people because they listened to God and then spoke the words of God to others. This is what God has always wanted for all of us. Even Moses said “I wish all God’s people would prophesy”.
 
God made an amazing promise to us in Isaiah 59:21 “My Spirit that is upon you, and my words that I have put in your mouth, shall not depart out of your mouth, or out of the mouth of your offspring, or out of the mouth of your children’s offspring,” says the LORD, “from this time forth and forevermore.”
 
So we could say that God not only wants to talk to you, He also wants your mouth! He wants to fill your mouth with His words. This was a promise that the prophetic gift would stay with God’s people generation after generation. It has never ceased. God simply wants to talk to us and through us. The New Testament says “You can all prophesy”. Even though the Jews in Jesus time were taught by their leaders that prophesy ceased, the book of Hebrews was written to persuade them to let God talk. “We must pay much closer attention to what we have heard” and “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts” and “See that you do not refuse Him who is speaking”.
 
Since the Old Testament scriptures had been completed and for over 400 years there were no prophets, the Jewish leaders were beginning to teach that God has stopped speaking that way. They taught that since they had the scripture God no longer spoke like he did in times past. So the writer of Hebrews is reminding them that they may hear God today and if they do they should pay attention to His words. Of course what we sense God is speaking to us must always align with scripture and the written word is the final authority in all matters of faith and practice. But that does not keep a speaking God from still speaking today. Just remember, God wants to talk to you!
