Knowing God

“He is not like us and He is different than what we may first assume.”

It is important that we think rightly about God. We must be sure that we are worshiping the God of the Bible as He has revealed himself. We cannot worship an image of a God that we have created. As Voltaire has said, “In the beginning, God created man in His own image, and man has been trying to repay the favor ever since.” He is not like us and He is different than what we may think.

Have you ever seriously considered whether your understanding of God is accurate? Do your ideas of what He is like and His ways align with Scripture? He is not like us and He is different than what we may first assume. Years ago, I first considered who God is while taking a class called “Knowing God” at Landisville Camp Meeting Grounds in our county. It was a survey of all the attributes of God. I learned things about God that I never considered just by this list compiled from Scripture. The new truth for me even affected my dreams, my view of the future, and what God wanted from me. It completely reworked my thinking about God.

I believe that many problems can be solved by rightly thinking about God. The most important thing about us is what we think of God. Why? Because ideas have consequences. God is our biggest idea. So, our idea of God has the biggest consequences. We can’t seek to be Godly or God-like unless we know what God is like. We can’t really know God unless we know the truth about God. We tend to become like the objects we worship. People who know God have an energy and strength that we can never find without knowing Him. “…but the people who know their God will display strength and take action.” (Daniel 11:32)

And we can’t recognize false gods unless we know the true God. We cannot know ourselves truly unless we know God truly. We can’t understand humanity if we don’t understand The One in whose image we were all made.

What God desires most from us is that we know Him.

God is honored by our service and sacrifice but what He really wants is for us to know Him and have a relationship with Him. God has said, “I delight in loyalty rather than sacrifice, and in the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.” (Hosea 6:6)

Jeremiah 9:23-24 -Thus says the Lord, ‘Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches; but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord who exercises lovingkindness, justice and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things,’ declares the Lord.

It’s not about what we do for him that He values most but it’s about us knowing Him. This year remember that God is a published author who has written a book for us. In that book, He has revealed Himself to us in the way that He wants us to know Him and think about Him. When you read the Bible this year, notice the attributes of God and what Scripture says about His ways.
