Great Leaders are Great Readers

Barry’s new book recommendation list.

While I crave learning and love to read, I often feel I don’t have the time to satisfy my appetite. But, this year the Elders of our church granted me a one-month study break! It was wonderful. This was the first time I took a whole month to read and write, the two things I love to do. I spent a few hours each day writing a church planting manual which is now published. The rest of the time I spent reading, researching, or listening to books on Audible. I finished nearly 20 books in the month!

Today I want to recommend a few of them to you as worth reading.  Look over the list as I am sure one or two will grab your attention.

Self-care

  1. Resilient by John Eldridge - A must-read for those feeling the effects of & challenged by the last 3 years.

  2. Sifted by Wayne Gordeiro - What to do when you go through a difficult time of sifting & testing.

  3. On The Edge of Hope by Dr. Mark Chironna - Mark is my favorite preacher. This book is about finding hope in difficult times.

  4. The Deepest Well by Dr. Nadine Harris - Research on how childhood trauma affects adult health.

Leadership and Church Health

  1. Turn The Ship Around by J. David Marque - A true story of a nuclear submarine commander on turning followers into leaders.

  2. Passing the Baton by Terry Roberts - A great book on passing a local church on to the next pastor.

  3. Succession by Peter Greer - Lots of wisdom on transitioning an organization or church to a successor.

  4. The New One Minute Manager by Ken Blanchard - A classic book on management made simple.

  5. Replant 101 by Mark Hallack - Instead of trying to revitalize a dying church why not replant it?

  6. What’s Next by Chris Hodges - A practical guide on taking steps to spiritual growth or leading others to take the next steps.

  7. Stay in Your Lane by Lee Downingue - How to find your unique lane in life and learn to stay in it to succeed.

  1. The Lost History of Christianity by Phillip Jenkins - Analysis of regions that were once Christian but have lost the faith.
